Essentials for every texture

The pieces every routine borrows from: a three-way cream conditioner, a six-oil blend, a heat-protecting styling foam, two gels, an edge control and two single-use masks. What Texture ID puts in, and leaves out

Texture ID Coils Detangling Shampoo

Sorted by hair, not by step

The range is split into Curls, Coils and Low Porosity lines with the Essentials shared between them. You match the line to your hair first, then pick the step, which is the reverse of most shelves and removes the guesswork about whether a conditioner is heavy enough.

Texture ID Firm Holding Gel

The same free-from list on every bottle

Every product is free of parabens, sulfates, mineral oil, petrolatum and gluten; the Coils line adds phthalates and artificial color, and most of the Low Porosity and styling products are vegan. The list does not change from shampoo to gel, so reading one label covers the range.

Texture ID Multipurpose Oil

Named ingredients, not vague blends

Murumuru butter and rose water in the Curls conditioner, sweet almond oil, honey and yogurt extract in the Coils shampoo, cocoa and shea butter with babassu oil in the defining gel, six named oils in the multipurpose oil. The Low Porosity line contains vitamins B, C and E. You can check a bottle against a known sensitivity.

Texture ID Firm Hold Edge Control

Hold in three steps

The custard and foam give soft to medium hold, the Smooth Defining Gel and Finger Coil Gel medium to firm, the Firm Holding Gel and Edge Control firm. The range covers a wash and go and a slicked bun with the same free-from list, so a drawer can hold both.

What Texture ID formulas are made with

The base of the range is a short free-from list: no parabens, sulfates, mineral oil, petrolatum or gluten on any product. The Coils line and the refresher spray also leave out phthalates and artificial color; the edge control, oil and apple cider vinegar rinse leave out alcohol; the Low Porosity mask and edge control also skip SLS/SLES. Vegan products are marked on the bottle.

The active ingredients are named per product. Conditioners lean on butters and oils: murumuru butter, rose water and vitamin E in Curls, sweet almond oil, honey and yogurt extract in Coils, grapeseed oil, honey and keratin in the two-minute mask. The Low Porosity line is built on aloe vera and vitamins B, C and E. Stylers use cocoa butter, shea butter and babassu oil, biotin, rosemary and olive oil, or mango butter.

Care is simple. The foam protects to 450°F, so it goes on before any heat. The Curls conditioner stays on for at least five minutes before rinsing; the two-minute mask does its work in two. Most styling gels promise no flakes or white residue, which means they rinse out on the next wash day rather than needing a clarifying rinse, though the ACV rinse is there for locs and braids that cannot be shampooed often.

Which Texture ID line for which hair

Texture ID Coils Detangling Conditioner

Wash day on 4C coils

Coils Detangling Shampoo in sections, Coils Detangling Conditioner left in while a wide comb works through, then the Coils Leave-In and the Daily Moisturizing Coil Cream. The finger coil gel comes out only if the style is coils rather than a puff.

Texture ID Curls Refresher Spray

A wash and go that lasts past Tuesday

Curls Conditioner for slip and fewer split ends, Curl Defining Custard on soaking wet hair for curl definition, and the Curls Refresher Spray each morning to revive what flattened overnight. The Smooth Defining Gel replaces the custard when it has to reduce frizz by noon.

Texture ID Low Porosity Vitamin Leave-In

Hair that stays dry no matter how much you add

That is usually low porosity. The aloe vera gel shampoo cleans without coating, the vitamin conditioner and leave-in stay light, and the vitamin mask goes on before any heat. The mango butter cream holds a twistout through humidity.

Texture ID Scalp Relief ACV Rinse

Protective styles and the scalp under them

The apple cider vinegar rinse clarifies a scalp under locs or braids without a full shampoo, the multipurpose oil goes on the scalp afterward, and the edge control finishes the hairline without alcohol or white residue.

About the Texture ID range

The range is a hair care system for textured hair, sold as three lines and a set of shared essentials: Curls for wavy-to-curly patterns, Coils for tight patterns, Low Porosity for hair that resists water, and Essentials for the stylers, masks and oil that every routine uses. Twenty-two products make up the range.

Across the lines the formulas share a free-from list and name their key ingredients, so the difference between a Curls and a Coils conditioner is weight and slip rather than philosophy. The Low Porosity line is the lightest of the three and the only one built around vitamins instead of butters.

If your hair is a loose curl, start in Curls; if it coils tightly and knots when dry, start in Coils; if product sits on the surface and hair still feels dry, start in Low Porosity. Then add from Essentials: the foam before heat, a gel for hold, the masks for damage, the oil to seal.

This is an independent catalogue of the range, not the brand's own shop.

Questions before you buy

Which line suits which hair?
Curls is for wavy and curly patterns, Coils for tight coily patterns that knot when dry, and Low Porosity for hair that takes a long time to get wet and leaves product sitting on top. Essentials, the gels, foam, masks and oil, are shared by all three.
Are the products vegan?
Most are marked vegan on the listing: the whole Low Porosity line, the Curls Conditioner, the Smooth Defining Gel, the Firm Holding Gel, the Edge Control, the Multipurpose Oil and the ACV rinse. The Coils line, the custard, the foam, the masks and the Triple Moisture conditioner list a free-from set but not a vegan claim.
Which products are safe for color-treated hair?
The ones that state it: the Curls Conditioner, the Low Porosity Vitamin Conditioner and Mask, the Coils Detangling Shampoo and Conditioner, the Triple Moisture Cream Conditioner and the 8-in-1 Protein Reconstructor Mask.
What is the difference between the three gels?
The Smooth Defining Gel is the lightest, built on cocoa and shea butter for curl definition and shine. The Finger Coil Gel is medium to firm with no crunch or flakes. The Firm Holding Gel is firm and long-lasting for buns, ponytails and slicked-back looks. The Edge Control is a separate 4-ounce pot for the hairline.
How much heat does the foam protect against?
Up to 450°F, with a light-to-medium hold. It is the product to use under a hooded dryer, blow-dryer or flat iron; nothing else in the range makes a heat claim except the Low Porosity Vitamin Mask, which is formulated to protect from heat damage.
How are the single-use masks meant to be used?
Each is a 1.25-ounce packet. The 2 Minute Moisture Renewal Mask replenishes moisture with grapeseed oil, honey and keratin in two minutes; the 8-in-1 Protein Reconstructor is the strengthening treatment after color or heat damage. Use one or the other on a wash day, not both at once.
